Wondering who is eligible for Medicare? There are a number of factors that determine Medicare eligibility.

In general, you are eligible for Medicare if you are 65 or older, or you are younger than 65 and meet criteria for certain disabilities. Enrollment eligibility requirements may vary by plan types.

Read below to learn more about Medicare eligibility for specific types of Medicare coverage.

Medicare Part A (hospital insurance)
  • you are 64 years and 9 months old or older; or
  • you are under 65 but qualify due to a disability or other condition
  • you have end-stage renal disease (ESRD)
When eligible, you will automatically get Part A if you already receive benefits from Social Security or the Railroad Retirement Board.
Medicare Part B (medical insurance)
  • you are 64 years and 9 months old or older; or
  • you are under 65 but qualify due to a disability or other condition
  • you have end-stage renal disease (ESRD)

Part B is optional. If you decide not to enroll when you first become eligible for Medicare coverage, you may have to pay a late enrollment penalty.

Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage)

Kaiser Permanente offers Medicare Advantage plans in California, Colorado, Hawaii, Georgia, and Oregon/Washington

  • you are entitled to Part A;
  • you are enrolled in Part B; and
  • you live in the service area of the plan
  • you do not have end-stage renal disease (ESRD), unless you meet one of the few exceptions.

Medicare Cost plan

Kaiser Permanente offers Cost plans in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington D.C.

  • you are entitled to Part A and enrolled in Part B; or
  • you are enrolled in Part B only; and
  • you live in the service area of the plan

Medicare Part D (prescription drugs)
