Answers to common questions about care during COVID-19
No matter what challenges arise, you can get the care you need with a Kaiser Permanente Medicare health plan.
The outbreak of COVID-19 may have changed what you’re looking for in a Medicare health plan. But one thing remains the same — you expect quality care. And that’s what you’ll get as a Kaiser Permanente Medicare health plan member, now and in the future. We make it easy and convenient for members to get care without leaving home. Have prescriptions mailed to you and talk to a doctor on your smartphone or computer. And rest assured that when you come in, you’ll get safe, high-quality care in person.
Many Medicare health plan shoppers like you have reached out with questions about how they’ll get care if they join Kaiser Permanente. Below are our answers to your most common questions.
Will I be able to refill my prescriptions?
Yes, members can order refills online at kp.org, on the Kaiser Permanente app, or over the phone — and in most cases, refills can be mailed at no additional cost. For urgent prescriptions, visit the closest available Kaiser Permanente pharmacy.
Will I be able to see a doctor if I need to?
Kaiser Permanente members have many ways to get quality care without leaving their home. In many cases, you can schedule an appointment to talk with a clinician over phone or video* — and just like an in-person visit, they’ll know your health history and give you personalized care. You can also email your doctor’s office or get self-care advice online. If you need to come in, we’ll be here for you — and your health and safety are our top priority.
Is Kaiser Permanente closing any facilities?
To provide the safest care during the COVID-19 outbreak, we’ve temporarily closed or limited in-person services at some facilities. This will help us make sure staff, medical equipment, and supplies are where they’re needed most and limit exposure of members and staff to the coronavirus. You can still get the care you need. Emergency departments remain open for those with serious conditions who need immediate medical attention.**
Can I be tested for COVID-19 at Kaiser Permanente?
We’re prepared to test patients for COVID-19 if testing is necessary, per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and public health agency guidelines. We can only test Kaiser Permanente members.
If you're a member and are worried that you or a family member is showing symptoms of COVID-19, please call us first before coming in, as you need a referral from a Kaiser Permanente doctor and an appointment to get tested at our facilities. Testing and diagnosis of COVID-19 are available at no cost to members.
What happens if there’s an emergency and I can’t get to a Kaiser Permanente facility?
If you’re having a medical emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest hospital. Tell them if you have COVID-19 symptoms. Kaiser Permanente members are covered for emergency and urgent care anywhere.
